Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between decking oil, stain and paint?
Decking oil penetrates the timber to enhance natural grain and nourish the wood. Premium options like Cutek also help protect against moisture and UV, while stains add pigment for colour and extra sun resistance.
Paint provides a more opaque, durable coating but can hide timber texture.
Oils and stains are preferred when you want to maintain a natural look, as they allow the timber to breathe and make future maintenance easier. Paint, on the other hand, suits older decks where surface imperfections need concealing.
Can a weathered or grey deck be restained without replacing boards?
Yes, provided the timber is still structurally sound. Weathered decks can often be rejuvenated with a thorough clean, sanding and brightening treatment before restaining. This process removes greyed fibres and surface contaminants, allowing the new stain to absorb evenly.
Severely cracked or rotted boards, however, may need replacing first. Proper surface preparation is the key to achieving an even colour and long-lasting finish.
How long should I stay off the deck after staining?
Light foot traffic is usually fine after 24 hours, but full curing can take up to 72 hours depending on temperature, humidity and the type of stain used. During this period, it’s best to avoid placing furniture or planters on the surface.
Allowing proper drying time helps prevent marks, patchiness or imprints and ensures the coating bonds fully to the timber for a smooth, even finish.
Protect Your Deck
Getting your deck oiled and stained or painted will not only improve its appearance and aesthetics but also provides extra protection all year long. Over time, it's natural for timber to lose its shine and colour. To minimise the effects of the powerful Queensland sun, we can apply an even coat of timber oil that acts as a protective layer while resisting dirt and dust adhesion. Alternatively we can paint your deck to match the house.
Our team exclusively uses quality products from Cutek and Sikkens to ensure a superior finish the first time, every time. Cutek offers superior, eco-friendly timber protection, ensuring long lasting beauty and durability. Simmons Paints provide innovative, durable coatings with low VOC, low odour formulations for healthier environments. Both brands excel in quality and sustainability, making them top choices for various applications.
